Leadership is at the core of life. Without it, life would be stagnant. We would have stuck in the Stone Age era. Leadership is the source of all inventions, innovation, discovery, and sadly, division. Leadership has caused war and has led to peace. It is the glue that holds together civilizations. Society thrives under good leadership and crumbles under poor leadership. Your life is affected directly by the person leading you right now. The nature of leadership is determined by the principles backing it. If you are reading this, you probably know good principles of leadership. In this piece, I will share what global leader, speaker, and pastor Dr. Myles Munroe shared about poor leadership principles.
Politics without principles
Politics are only good when backed by selfless and good principles. Unfortunately, the majority of politicians in Kenya use politics for selfish gain. They join politics to amass wealth rather than to serve the people. A country full of poor politics will hardly grow. It’s more than 60 years since Kenya gained independence but we are still struggling with unemployment, poverty, and food insecurity. The inequality gap widens every year. Corruption in our country cuts across the society. The poor are as corrupt as the elite. Corruption is the greatest indicator of politicking without principles. Few politicians are loyal to their principles. They will betray, backstab, or murder a person to get power.
Pleasure Without Conscious
What’s life without pleasure? Everyone should have it. Where love is, pleasure is also there. Pleasure destroys when it becomes uncontrollable. Uncontrollable pleasure gradually leads to immorality, impulsive buying, corruption, and misuse of power. Many leaders in our country fall victim to pleasure without conscience. They view leadership as a gateway to pleasure. All leaders have access to money, power, and influence. Its common sense to use these resources to serve their followers. Instead, our leaders will spend millions having pleasure outside the country. Others use their resources to spend on expensive things.
Wealth Without Work
Everyone wants wealth. Wealth earns a man respect and honor from his peers. Wealth guarantees comfort. Like leadership, there are defined ways to get and accumulate wealth. These ways are hard to master and takes a long time. Sadly, we do not want to follow these ancient ways of wealth. We want it quick and through any means possible. The desire to get wealth without working has caused many leaders to develop illegal ways to get money. We launder money, rob banks, extort people, scam businesses and lie to one another to get money. Many leaders have unconsciously subscribed to this principle and many Kenyans are suffering because of them.
Knowledge without Character
We are more educated now than 10 years ago. Internet and technology have eased the burden of accessing information. In fact, you do not have to go to school to be educated. Platforms like YouTube have many free courses. Our pursuit of knowledge pales in comparison to our pursuit of good character. We have been taught that education is the key to success. The statement is true but not in totality. Education must be combined with good character to bring success. Knowledgable leaders with questionable character are a threat to our employed brothers and sisters. Educated leaders practicing nepotism, tribalism, or engaging in sexual misconduct lack character. They are examples of leaders who worked hard to get a certificate but forgot to have good character.
Business Without Morality
Many businesses are focused on money instead of serving the community. Businessess are designed to make products and services accessible to people at a price. The capitalistic system inspires people to think of ways to serve the community better faster and at the most affordable rate. The determination to meet the demands of the capital system had led many businesses to serve products and services at the expense of morals. Human trafficking robs young men and women’s lives and sense of belonging yet in Kenya approximately 30,000 people are victims of human and sex trafficking. Its a booming business in Kenya despite thousands of Kenya getting lost others, murdered. Prostitution is now practiced in a broad light. Pop music celebrates nudity like it’s the order of the day yet we have an institution controlling videos displayed on TV.
Science without Humanity
Science has lengthened men’s lifetimes. We have better medicines, thanks to science. Our hospitals have better machines, all of it owed to science. At the center of technology is science. Science is at the coreof progress in society. Science is a double-edged sword. It has led us backward as it has advanced us. We have creatives using science as a tool to hurt other humans. Science has made war severe. Scientists have created addictive drugs like cocaine, and heroin and increased THC on marijuana in the name of making it better for the consumer. Abortion pill manufacturers never consider the guilt and shame that follows women who use it to terminate their pregnancy. Our modern world has used science to satisfy evil desires.

Worship without discipline
Worship is natural to humans. All religions across the world subscribe to some form of worship. It is natural for man to desire fellowship with God. Many leaders acknowledge the need for worship but they want to worship as they like. God operates uniquely. He has placed certain demands on humans. He demands us to love Him with all our hearts, soul, and mind and to love our neighbor as we love ourselves. In the book of Romans, God asks humans to present their bodies as living sacrifices. Many leaders ignore the disciplines from the Bible. They behave how they want and expect to worship with other believers. In Kenya, sinning leaders are known to use the Church’s pulpit as a campaigning platform. The disrespect for the pulpit is unreal.
These poor principles of leadership cut across all institution. This is the reason leadership problems are in the government as well as in schools and churches. The leadership gap in our country is too big to ignore. The cycle of corruption in our country will continue if our leaders ignore its impact on the nation. Provided we have educated leaders with wanting character, we can say goodbye to progress. Until we educate young people on this poor principle, we will only be recycling poor leaders.
