Role of Faith in Leadership

Role of Faith in Leadership

Faith is believing something will happen before it happens. The Bible defines Faith as the substance of the things hoped for and the evidence of the things unseen. Faith plays a central role in the journey to become. Personal development coaches will encourage you to visualize where you want to be in the future but faith goes a little deeper. Faith demands us to visualize and believe what we see must happen. Faith is a tool a leader can use to create a vision, fuel his energy, change his mindset and give his life meaning. All great leaders had faith as part of the arsenals that made them great.

Creating Vision

Faith is the foundation of vision. It opens the world of possibilities and the assurance of success. Vision is the ability to think and imagine something. Faith is believing the vision will be actualized whether circumstances favor the vision or not. To be a faithful person is a state of the heart. When this state is established in your heart, it affects all areas of your life. Faith gives the leader a vision for their work, family, and character.

In 1985, Myron Golden started his career in insurance. He had the desire to become a top seller. He believed he could become great as he saw in his vision. It took him two years to make his first sale. Right now, he is a top salesperson. He has succeeded in building a multi-million empire and written international best sellers. Through hard work and determination, Golden actualized what he believed he could. Without faith, he would have given up in the two years he did not make sales.

His faith kept on pushing him because he believed the circumstances around him could not determine his outcome. All leaders must embody a faith similar to Golden’s. They must firmly believe their vision must come to pass regardless of the situation around them.

Faith is fuel

Faith is a leader’s fuel as petrol is to a car. Failure, discouragement, and uncertainty are part of the journey to actualize a vision. All great leaders have felt the urge to quit. There is a popular quote that says winners never quit and quitters never win.

The quote is true, only that it doesn’t tell us the reason winners never quit, especially when reasons to quit emerge. I have gone through situations that made me doubt my leadership abilities.  Imposter syndrome has kicked in several times but faith gave me the strength to rise above it. Faith taps into the inner strength when external situations are unfavorable.

It gives us the power to be diligent when there is no reason to show up. Faith pushed Myron for two years when he could not make sales. It gave him a reason to wake up. Leaders with faith encourage and motivate their followers when storms come.

Followers will question the leader’s potential if he fumbles in times of calamity. The true test of a leader’s ability happens when storms come. How deeply a leader believes in his vision will be put to the test when trials come. His faith is the only currency he can use to buy stability.

Faith Breeds Superior Mindset

Faith is the antidote to a poor mindset, arrival, and victim mentality. Faith gives us the courage to believe in ourselves and the skills we possess. Every great man rose to leadership because they combined skills and character with faith.

Faith inspires leaders to identify and know the skills they possess. It gives them the courage to refine them and practice in real-life situations. Through practice, the leader learns their true potential. Faith also gives leaders inner satisfaction. When you have faith, you believe your skills were meant to solve a need in society. This gives you a sense of belonging and acceptance.

Faith changes how we view situations. Popular gospel artist Guardian Angel was a street kid raised in a children’s home in Kenya. He had the dream and passion to become a popular musician but resources were limited.

Instead of complaining, he used the resources he had to his advantage. Others would have seen his situation as a challenge for growth but Guardian’s Angel’s faith gave him a new perspective of his situation. Now, he is one of the most celebrated gospel artists in Kenya.

Leaders must learn to see difficult situations as opportunities to grow and learn. They must learn to view they firey furnace as the substance used to purify gold.

Faith gives life meaning

The free are those knowing their purpose. Myles Munroe once shared that the greatest tragedy in life is not fear but a life without purpose. A purposeless life is the reason many drink themselves to stupor, commit suicide, get depressed, or marry the wrong people. Bronnie Ware, a palliative care specialist, wrote that many of her patients regretted not living life true to themselves.

Knowing our purpose frees us from the bondage of a broken world. Faith is the road that we use to learn our purpose. Once a leader has faith, they will know their purpose. And, when they know their purpose, they will pursue it with energy and zeal. Discovering their purpose gives them energy more than money.

Successful leaders like Nyawira Gachugi pursue her ambition because she has discovered their why. Nyawira helps people uncover trauma, depression, and mental health issues.

Money is never the reason behind her work. She finds satisfaction in helping people. All leader must employ the same strategy to remain relevant and effective in their job. Without faith, the leader will be frustrated serving their followers.

Faith is not taught in school. It is something a leader must build. Faith gives leaders a unique approach to their responsibility where they serve and their personal lives. With faith, a leader can have a powerful and realistic vision. It also acts as the fuel to go on especially when storms come. When faith is combined with skills, it changes the leader’s mindset and gives their life meaning.
