How to Know Your Area of Expertise

How to Know Your Area of Expertise

Elon Musk is not Usain Bolt but both are masters at their craft. Cristiano Ronaldo is in no way close to Will Smith but both are exceptional in their industry. Success principles are the same in whatever industry you are practicing. Everyone was made to succeed in a specific area. Genes and our personalities dictate where we can easily find success. Before investing heavily in a craft, you must evaluate whether or not you will succeed. The following questions will guide you into finding the area you will likely succeed.

  1. What’s a hobby to you but others look at it like work?

I have never looked at writing like a job. It’s 10 years into my writing career and I feel like I have just started. It is so easy for me to sit and write for hours. My friends wonder how I can write so many words in one article. Even if it’s only 1,000 words.  Writing is fun to me but my friends see it as work. That’s how I learned I can earn through my passion for writing. It is easy to flourish at what you love, especially if you get rewards for doing it.

When you find something you love, you cannot separate yourself from it. You become your passion and are determined to take any risk to flourish. In your pursuit for success seek something you will do out of passion instead of the rewards. Everyone has something unique they do for fun while others see it as work. Once you find it, look for ways to serve others with your hobby. Many successful people have thrived in their businesses after major crises because they love what they do. They have attached pleasure in doing things other people perceive as work.

2. What makes me lose track of time?

Anyone who waits for 5. oo o’clock to leave work will plateau in his career or quit. Waiting for the day to end to leave work equals serving in the wrong industry. Their minds are fixed on the time instead of their work. People who love their work forget to track time. They can be extremely invested in their job that they do not know how much time has gone. Do you have something that makes you forget everything happening on the outside? That thing will bring you more success than you can imagine. Focus is a bedrock of success. Whatever you focus on grows.

When you focus on something to the point of losing track of time, it will grow even without your knowledge. Pablo Picasso’s passion for art is known globally. The guru would spend 14 hours on a single painting and spend the rest of the day resting or thinking of his next piece of art. His ability to be soaked in his craft made him a celebrated artist. We can also apply the same strategy in your pursuit of your gift.

3. Where do I get greater results than the average person?

School is the best system for evaluating where we are great. Every successful person displayed better results in a specific area earlier in life. Celebrated athletes in the NBA or Kenya had greater results than most people before they made it globally. What we are good at begins manifestation early into our lives. The Bible captured this in the life of Jesus. When He was 12 years old, he showed passion for the word of God from the questions he asked the leaders at that time. The indicators of a great spiritual leader were visible early in his life before making it to the global stage. Each one of us has something we can do better than others. Look at what you were good at as a student or the role people selected you to do in casual things. What do people say you are good at? What areas did you get awarded most in high school or campus? What do people praise you most for? You will find great success once you start investing and refining.

4. What comes naturally to you?

Other than writing, leadership comes naturally to me. Wherever I am, people choose me to lead in something. I have always gravitated toward serving other people. Currently, I am leading a group in the church. I will not be surprised if I get another leading opportunity. I have the gift of leadership. I will thrive at it.  Bill Gates’s passion for software engineering came naturally to him. This passion made him the world’s richest person. When something comes naturally, you understand its systems better than others.

Your results reveal you are better at a specific area than others. What comes naturally to you started inside before it manifested outside. This is the power of identity. Your identity is wrapped with different gifts. When you realize your identity, things aligned with your identity will gravitate towards you. Knowing your identity is the best way to develop new habits and quit bad ones. If music comes easily to you, your social media, movie preferences, and friends will also have a passion for music. What gravitates towards you naturally finds its way in subtle forms when you are passive with it. Look for a common denominator in everything you do and find your God-given gift.

We can easily succeed when we are precise about what we want. When genes do not favor you, you can examine where your personality thrives. You can always find what you are good at when you know something you are good at but others see it as work, the things that make you lose track of time, the area where you get results than the average person, and the area that naturally gravitates towards you.

Your chances of success increase when the environment favors what you are exceptional at. You have a responsibility to know where your personality will succeed since success is a guarantee.
